Good stress vs bad stress
Not all stress is bad. Stress is body’s nervous system’s response to an actual or perceived threat. Some stress is good
for the body. It keeps you on your toes to the circumstances around you. But after a particular circumstance has passed, the normal response of the body should be to de-stress. But it doesn’t happen that way with us. In fact any new threat adds more stress to already huge pile of stress stored in the body. This was a natural instinct for ancient people. They used to face wild animals, their fight-or-flight response used to trigger. They then either fight with the animal or run away
from it. So their nervous system rebalanced itself as a result of this activity. However, in our case, we do not face wild animals now. Our threats have changed from wild animals to our boss, saas, bahu, shohar, traffic, brands,
etc. and we have no outlet or activity to release that stress. So the stress continues to pile up so much that it starts to manifest itself as physical illnesses. A student stressing for his exam is good stress. He works hard as a result of that stress. But if he continues to stress long after the exam then that stress would take toll on his health.
